The Caspian Sea, the largest inland body of water globally, is facing a dire ecological crisis. Since the mid-1990s, this saline lake has significantly shrunk, losing an area close to the size of Sicily. New research sheds light on the primary factors behind this alarming trend, linking falling water levels to diminished river inflows from the surrounding nations of Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
A key element of the study, published on June 5 in Earth's Future, emphasizes the Volga River's critical role. This river, the longest in Europe, contributes about 80% of the inflow to the Caspian. However, its discharge has drastically decreased in recent decades, prompting researchers to investigate the reasons behind this decline.
Identifying the Causes
Amir AghaKouchak, a co-author of the study and professor at the University of California, Irvine, discussed the findings. While climate change often comes to mind as a cause for such changes, AghaKouchak suggests that it only partially explains the observed reduction in water levels.
Over the past 30 years, the Caspian Sea’s levels have plummeted by nearly 2 meters (about 6.5 feet), equating to a loss of approximately 24,000 square kilometers (around 9,300 square miles), or 5% of the sea's area. Notably, rainfall patterns in the region haven't changed significantly, indicating that factors beyond mere precipitation are at work.
According to AghaKouchak, increased evaporation accounts for about a third of the water loss, but the rest is likely connected to human activities, including irrigation and groundwater extraction. Access to data regarding these withdrawals remains limited, due in part to regional governments' reluctance to share information.

Several countries bordering the Caspian have constructed large dams to harness hydropower. Such infrastructure development, particularly in Russia, takes vital water resources away from the lake. AghaKouchak notes that agricultural needs are escalating across these nations, leading to heightened water demands that contribute to the sea's decline.
Although specific data on water usage is scarce, projects like the Volga-Don Canal exemplify how infrastructure can exacerbate the crisis. However, the problem cannot be attributed to a single initiative; rather, it's the cumulative effect of multiple withdrawals over time that has significantly diminished the Volga's outflow into the Caspian.
Future Consequences
AghaKouchak foresees a troubling scenario for the Caspian Sea, drawing parallels to the fates of other large lakes that have suffered similar declines, such as the Aral Sea and Lake Urmia. Both have experienced catastrophic ecological degradation and are now mostly devoid of life. While he hopes the Caspian doesn’t reach a similar catastrophic state, he acknowledges the worrying trajectory it’s on.
Should current trends persist, significant portions of the Caspian Sea could dry up. Even a reduction of just 20% of its volume would have severe ecological and socioeconomic implications, potentially leading to a crisis reminiscent of those seen in smaller lakes in similar climates.

The implications of a retreating Caspian Sea extend beyond just ecological impacts. As the water recedes, it exposes saline lake beds, releasing minerals into the atmosphere and increasing the risk of respiratory and eye diseases in surrounding populations. Moreover, saline deposits can affect agricultural productivity in the region, posing threats to food security.
Commercial shipping ports in the Caspian are at risk as well. The northern section of the sea, where the current shrinkage is most pronounced, is shallower, which could impede maritime operations. Ports might need substantial investments to adapt, pushing shipping routes southward and potentially straining local economies.

To mitigate this alarming trend, AghaKouchak emphasizes the need for effective demand management. Sanctioning immediate water usage reductions might not grab headlines, but it's essential for driving sustainable practices in the region. Nonetheless, ongoing conflicts may hinder the prioritization and investment needed for such resource management strategies.
A unique complication arises from the rise in cotton production, which requires substantial water for its irrigation. Countries in the region, including Russia, have ramped up cotton cultivation for various purposes, including military applications. The demand for cotton to produce ammunition has heightened agricultural water use, thereby exacerbating the depletion of surface and groundwater resources, further threatening the Caspian Sea.
As researchers and policymakers consider the implications of the findings, there's an urgent need to balance human demands with environmental stewardship. The future of the Caspian Sea depends on collective regional actions that recognize the critical importance of sustainable water management and ecological preservation.
